after spending a few hours in vain I need help.

Probably it’s simple

There are many pieces of text in one document. Each piece of text occupies two to four lines. And all pieces are separated from each other by two hard returns or two line breaks (I hit ENTER twice at the end of each piece). I’m not sure but you could probably call them paragraphs???

I need to create line numbering which gives:

1 to the first line of the first piece of text.

2 to the first line of the second piece of text.

3 to the first line of the third piece of text.

etc.

now I have

First piece of text blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Second piece of text blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah .

Third piece of text blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

I’d like to have:

1 First piece of text blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

2 Second piece of text blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah .

3 Third piece of text blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

the numbers 1, 2,3 … should line numbers and NOT part of the text and should NOT be bullets.

The best you could probably hope for is an option to show extra padding after a paragraph, rather than manually adding extra blank lines (which would otherwise get numbered). You can definitely do it in Word using the Page Layout and Paragraph options, and probably other editors that allow formatting, but I can’t say I’ve ever seen the functionality in a text editor.

Like SD said – you want something RichText editors have from a Text/Code editor. That said you can easily transform this with regexp to e.g. HTML:

Search:

([^rn]+)[rn]+

Replace:

<li>1n</li>
