[RENAME] pNotepad --- PLEASE!

Hi, I am wondering if this is at all possible to do.

I would like to rename the title bar of Programmer's Notepad to pNotepad.
Why? Because Programmer's Notepad is too long for a title in the taskbar and it gets cut off. All's you see is "Programmer's Note..." and it looks sloppy on my taskbar. So please, I beg, can someone tell me how to have this changed? As you can tell, I am a bit anal with how things look. The name pNotepad is already pretty widely known, and I think it should become the official name of Programmer's Notepad. Let's face it, pNotepad just sounds better, looks better, it is better! I thought years ago that the project was titled pNotepad, but I may be wrong. I have been using Zend Studio for the longest time now and finally came to my senses and switched back to pNotepad.

Someone please help. I'd really like to avoid having to go through compiling my own custom version every time a new one comes out.

Please don't change this. It's perfectly fine the way it is.

arvo, if you're anal about this then write a program that loops through all the windows on the desktop and change the title bars for anything containing "Programmer's Notepad - " to whatever you like. You can do this with the API SetWindowText().

I would second the idea of arvo, but it would be nicer if one could simply change it in the settings. It could be as simple as a textbox for the name before file name or more flexible e.g. default could be:
"Programmer's Notepad [$P$N]"
where:
$P - path to current file
$N - name of current file
(this is similar to Total Commander)

I like the template idea Nux suggested. Then you could do something like "$N - PNotepad" to have the filename show up first so the taskbar button says what file is being worked on.

I would that agree it should that changed to pNotepad or similar. "Programmer's Notepad" is just too clumsy. And I also get "Programmer's Note..." in the task bar and on the shortcut on my desktop.

I don't quite follow the logic of making the name of the product configurable. It's a brand name afterall--another reason why it should not be too clumsy.

May I suggest a poll is set-up to get the measure of what people think?

Just my thoughts. I like PN whatever it is called anyway.

I don't have any means of setting up a poll, otherwise I would have. Based on the responses, it seems to be a fairly favorable idea. Nux seemed to expand upon my idea, which I think would also be very nice. Hopefully the developers will see this thread and post a reply with their take on it.

I agree that Programmer's Notepad is a bit clumsy, mainly due to the length and apostrophe. Plus, the website itself is pnotepad. However, since the official name is Programmer's Notepad, but some people want it shorter, it seems to make sense to make it configurable for these people. If we changed the window title to say pnotepad by default, and the domain name is pnotepad, then we're really being confusing by keeping the "Programmer's Notepad" brand around and should just change everything to be the same. If we're going to keep the long name around at all, this should be an option and not a default for consistency. Either all or none in my opinion.

The product is "Programmer's NotePad" not "pNotepad". "pNotepad" is completely ambiguous of the product.

Just write a tool to change it for you, set it to load at startup, and leave it in the tray.

It's not the name of the of the product we're after here. It's just about setting a title for the window. Also note that e.g. Firefox and Open Office show their name after an opened file (webpage). This is also common for webpages where an icon shows you what program you are using and then follows some kind of page specific subtitle.

Personally I don't like the idea of having a program running in the background just for changing a title or something. A configuration option for that would be much nicer.

Adding the filename to the left and "- Programmer's Notepad" to the right sounds reasonable.

If you really want it changed you could just edit the exe's resources. Grab a resource editor (link below). Open pn.exe. Open string table 9. Change string id 128 to whatever you want (you might as well go for "PN") and save. I suggest you backup the exe first.

I did that with VS2008 and it worked, thanks. :-)

Unfortunately I don't see a simple way to move the file name in front of the name. There is some "Programmer's Notepad - %f", but changing it doesn't seem to change anything.

Yes, that's an annoying MDI-ism that automatically puts the filename there. I put a bit of time in a few years ago trying to reverse that and gave up and moved on to more important issues :)

I definitely want to end up with "filename - Programmer's Notepad" or even "filename - PN" or whatever but will have to work out the MDI problem first.
