A request was raised suggesting all the little toggle buttons from the mini toolbar be moved to optional buttons for the new customisable toolbar. What do you think?

...what is the mini tool bar?

At the bottom of each editor window is a small-in-height toolbar with toggles for colouring, word wrap, special characters and line numbers. That's the mini toolbar. An alternative option would be to put those buttons on the status bar.

Actually I like the buttons right where they are... It might be cool to have the buttons as options for a custom toolbar, but I really like them available right there on the current document. Now if you loose the MDI windows then I would say then that the toolbar is the way to go.

I was always kind of annoyed that there wasn't a toolbar button to hide/show the whitespace characters until this poll pointed me to the mini tool bar :)

I wish there was another option, allowing the mini toolbar to be hidden. If they're going to be visible, I like them on the mini toolbar. But right now there's no way to hide them at all, and I don't use them (I don't use any toolbars, actually). So I vote for D) Keep them in the mini toolbar, add option to hide mini toolbar.

You see, I'm never convinced that polls in text editor development are worthwhile, as the correct answer is always: d) all the above. :)

:) You can't please all of the people all of the time.

that would make PN even more customizable for all the different needs :)
would it be also possible to remove them, too?

Please put them away (on a hideable toolbar). I easily spend 30-40 hours in PN every week. I love anything that increases screen estate, any button that can be replaced by a keyboard action, anything that compacts the interface. Thank you for a great product.

Since the mini-toolbar contains both visual switches and file status (read-only) buttons, I would like to see it merged with the status bar. Plus, I am used to seeing it down there ;)

I voted no but an informative mockup might help convince me otherwise.

I think it they would be appropriately grouped with the highlighter scheme listbox on the main toolbar, except the toggle write protect which should go with the save buttons.

These buttons live happily in main toolbar in other editors, why did you need to invent such strange gadgets in the first place?

@maXmo The mini toolbar was originally inspired by HomeSite (a very long time ago) where they actually had one down the left-hand side of the edit window. It was a really useful per-document indication of the view options that were enabled, and provided easy toggling of those options for the mouse user. The main toolbar is by necessity modal (i.e. it can only show you details for the currently selected edit window).
Interestingly some people have suggested removing the main status bar and having a per-window status bar instead. The end result would look pretty much the same for single document users, but would provide a much more useful experience for those that edit multiple documents at a time in a split view. This would also perhaps make the mini toolbar more useful as it would be part of this status bar.

@simon,
Holy crap, homesite. I remember that one... it's the first HTML editor I used (right after notepad), had good design and some nice macros/autocomplete. Ahh, the memories.Posted 9 months ago # -
I've checked in changes for the next release that allow you to disable the mini toolbar, and also allow you to place all of the icons on the main toolbar should you want.

Thank you!
